In my series titled Facade I demonstrate the impact that facades have on perception. We all maintain outward facades at certain points to conceal our true emotions, creating an impression that might not be the same as our genuine feelings. They serve as crucial interfaces between our inner realities and our outer perceptions. A masking, showing a carefully constructed version of ourselves comes to the forefront. The facade is what others see. Facades can be useful social tools and serve as psychological protection mechanisms. Maintaining these facades comes at an emotional cost though. The inauthentic version of oneself ultimately leads to feelings of disconnection from others and ultimately oneself. Some facades are beneficial, serving as protection and shielding our emotions. The problem arises when facades become so entrenched that one loses touch with their authentic self. They may not accurately represent what lies beneath the outer layer. Facades, both protective and shielding, both give and take. Through my photographs, I seek to create a representation of this melding of emotions and masks; creating a beautiful facade.
