The 23rd of the Third Month: A Chronicle

I grew up in Fujian, a region rich in folk beliefs and traditions. The vibrant atmosphere of local customs deeply shaped my upbringing, and the festive events that accompany these traditions remain vivid in my memory. I hope to document these events and the people who take part in them. One of the most representative local deities in Fujian is Mazu, the revered sea goddess. As such, I chose to document the celebration of Mazu’s birthday—one of the most significant rituals in the region. This photographic series captures moments from the birthday festivities held on Meizhou Island, Mazu’s birthplace. Through these images, I aim to closely portray the sincere devotion of the worshippers and their authentic expressions of faith, revealing the deep-rooted maritime beliefs shared by coastal communities in Fujian and Taiwan.
