The Huwei Zhongyuan Pudu has its origins in a sombre chapter of local history. During the era of Japanese rule, the area around what is now Huwei's busiest roundabout was a grim execution ground where countless lives were lost. Over time, however, the site was transformed into a bustling marketplace, becoming a hub of daily life for the community. However, the tragic past lingered, with frequent accounts of supernatural encounters causing unease among the residents. In an attempt to appease the spirits of the departed and bring peace of mind to the living, local elders and community leaders proposed holding an annual Zhongyuan Pudu (Ghost Festival) ceremony. Central to this ritual is the towering paper effigy of 'Da Shi Ye'. Revered as the 'King of Ghosts', he presides over the festival, maintaining order among the spirits and ensuring that all souls can peacefully receive the offerings and salvation rites. Born of compassion and reverence, this ritual expanded year by year, growing from within the market to encompass the surrounding streets of Huwei. At its climax, spectacular fireworks rend the night sky, serving as a sublime offering to the deities and a guiding light for the wandering souls. The festival has evolved into a vital tradition that unites the community, transforming a history of tragedy into an annual celebration of remembrance, respect, and prayer for peace.
