Emerging from the water, an African Darter pauses in the shallows with its wings spread wide to catch the warmth of the sun. Light traces every feather in bronze and gold, transforming this familiar drying posture into a regal pose. Its long, serpentine neck rises above the wetland, while its sharply pointed bill turns toward the light as if acknowledging the new day. Unlike many waterbirds, African Darters have plumage that readily becomes waterlogged. This helps them swim low in the water and pursue fish beneath the surface, but afterward they must rest with their wings extended to dry. It is a practical act of survival, captured in this fleeting alignment of posture, light and reflection. I made this image from a low perspective to bring the viewer into the darter’s world, close to the waterline. The angle strengthens the bird’s presence and allows its reflection to extend the gesture below the surface. “Gilded Wings” celebrates an ordinary moment rendered extraordinary by light: a wetland hunter resting between dives, briefly adorned in gold.
