# Whispers in the Smoke: Generations of Faith Amid the noise and movement surrounding the arrival of Mazu, I found myself drawn to the quieter language of faith—light, smoke, gestures, and human presence. This eight-image black-and-white series was photographed during the arrival of Mazu from Baishatun Gongtian Temple in Miaoli to Beigang Chaotian Temple. Rather than documenting the spectacle of the pilgrimage, I followed the people within it: the Baoma-zai who leads the way, devotees praying beside incense burners and along the roadside, and figures emerging through clouds of smoke. The journey moves from individual devotion to collective belief. A fleeting burst of light on a carved temple dragon becomes a moment of stillness within the chaos. As Mazu arrives, individual gestures gather into a shared act of worship, revealing how faith can transform from something deeply personal into something held by an entire community. At the end, a mother and daughter share a quiet moment together. After the noise, smoke, and movement, their interaction becomes a reminder that faith is not only practiced—it is inherited, lived, and carried forward. I used black and white to strip away the spectacle of color and focus on what remains: faces, shadows, smoke, light, and gestures. For me, these photographs are not simply about a pilgrimage. They are about how faith survives—through the people who carry it, the communities who share it, and the generations who quietly pass it on. A living faith, whispered through smoke, carried from one generation to the next.
