Between Light and Shadow

Earth never enters these photographs, yet it shapes every frame. “Between Light and Shadow” traces the Moon’s transformation during a lunar eclipse—from its familiar illuminated surface through near-total darkness and toward the return of light. Together, the images reveal a celestial event not as a single spectacle, but as a sequence of subtle, irreversible changes. I created the series unexpectedly after arriving in Florida and looking up to find the eclipse already unfolding. There was no prepared shot list or constructed scene. I responded instinctively, continuing to photograph as Earth’s shadow moved across the lunar surface and altered its light, color, texture, and identity. Each frame records a different threshold between visibility and concealment. Familiar lunar details gradually recede. The illuminated surface narrows into a fragile arc. Muted red and brown tones emerge from within the shadow. At near-totality, the Moon remains visible beneath the darkness, crowned by a final line of light. The series transforms an astronomical occurrence into a study of presence, transition, and impermanence. Although the images appear quiet and minimal, they contain the alignment of the Sun, Earth, Moon, and observer. The unseen becomes visible through its effect on everything around it. For me, this encounter also marked a creative alignment. After years of exploring photography and searching for the subjects that felt most meaningful, I recognized my direction in the act of documenting something natural, fleeting, and impossible to control. “Between Light and Shadow” preserves more than an eclipse. It captures the moment darkness became evidence, change became the subject, and looking upward became a new way of seeing.
